The provincial colleges and national intervarsities were the main events of note last weekend. Pauline Gallagher representing Athlone IT picked up the ladies’ A singles title with a 21-6, 21-14, win over fellow Mayo student Amy Corrigan of the Sligo IT. Claremorris and St Mary’s College, Galway, were the venues for the boys’ and girls’ second level colleges over the weekend. The going was particularly tough in the eight boys’ grades but true to form, Kiltimagh duo T J Byrne and Shane Walsh from St Louis’, Kiltimagh, secured the junior doubles title with a reasonably comfortable win over Flanngan and Michéal Kenny, Castlerea CS, in their semi-final, and John Lalor and Conor Noone from St Mary’s in a well-contested final. Despite some fine performances, Mayo lost out to Galway and Roscommon in the other grades contested. In the girls’ finals at Claremorris, Melanie Nally was beaten by all-Ireland u16 champion Lauren O’Riordan in her junior singles semi-final, while Lorraine and Louise Gilmartin (Convent of Mercy, Ballina,) suffered the same fate in their junior doubles final.

The boys of Mooncoin put in an excellent performance to claim victory against Erin's Own in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons County Roinn A Under 21 final on Sunday afternoon in Nowlan Park.

The awards will be presented on November 26 in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport.

Mayo's Vincent Moran failed in his bid to capture a first ever All-Ireland senior singles hardball title at Mullingar on Saturday evening but he made the eventual winner — Eoin Kennedy of Dublin — work hard for his win. Kennedy dominated from the off and took the first game surprisingly easily on a 21 aces to six scoreline. However the Ballaghaderreen man came good in the second, playing some fantastic handball, and he won it 21 aces to 12. Kennedy raced into a commanding 11 aces to one lead in the deciding third and, despite Moran's best efforts, he was unable to recover from that bad start and lost it 21 aces to 10.

Kilkerrin/Clonberne defeated Moycullen by five points in the County u-21 B final in Pearse Stadium on a score-line of 0-11 to 0-6.

Shane Walsh (17), a fifth year student at Davitt College, Castlebar, was named All-Ireland Youth Volunteer of the Year during the fourth annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards.

Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann’s dream of retaining their all-Ireland senior 40x20 doubles title is still very much alive following a comprehensive victory over Wexford duo Gavin Buggy and Paul Lambert at Roscommon last weekend. The Ballaghaderreen duo were in top form and rarely troubled by the surprise quarter-final qualifiers, the pair wrapped on the tie in just over 40 minutes on a 21-9, 21-5 score line. They now meet Limerick intermediate duo, Seamus O’Carroll and CJ Fitzpatrick, in the semi-final in three weeks’ time. It was also a busy weekend for adults and juveniles with a host of all-Ireland semi-final ties down for decision at various venues.

There were no real surprises in the two provincial senior finals at Ballaghaderreen on Saturday afternoon as all-Ireland senior doubles champions Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann maintained their unbeaten run to take the provincial title at the expense of fellow club mates Vincent Moran and Campbell Brennan. The champions were in devastating form in a very one sided opener and they won it for the loss of just two aces. Moran and Brennan finally got around to playing some handball in the second and the duo, to their credit, made a real fight of it and it looked like the game could go either way at one stage. However Keegan and McCann did just enough to see off the challenge as they won the second 21 aces to 17. Marianna Rushe ran out the expected easy winner of the ladies’ senior singles final with an easy two games to nil victory over fellow St Coman’s contender Leona Doolin.

A two year driving disqualification was imposed on a 30-year-old man after he was convicted of drink driving at this week’s sitting of Claremorris District Court.
